Don't Panic!
Vintage TV Star of Dad's Army and George and Mildred offered this weekend

A vintage motorbike and sidecar which 'starred' in the popular TV comedy Dad's Army is being offered for sale in this weekend's Bonhams motorcycle auction at the 39th International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford (April 27 and 28).

The 1933 Brough Superior 1,096cc combination, registration number 'ATO 574', featured in two separate episodes of the classic show, firstly in the 1971 Christmas special 'Battle of the Giants', when it was used by the Walmington-on-Sea' Home Guard's rivals, Eastgate platoon.

Its second appearance came the following year, when the bike was used by Captain Mainwaring, Private Pike and Warden Hodges to try to deactivate a secret weapon.

The motorcycle later served as the primary transport for George and Mildred in the eponymous sitcom about the squabbling couple and featured in each episode's opening sequences.

However, prior to its television career, ATO 574 was a successful trials bike, winning the gold medal in the gruelling 1934 International Six Days Trial staged in the Austrian Alps.

Having been owned by the same family since 1965, the motorcycle is now offered for 're-commissioning' to return it to roadworthy condition. It has spent approximately 25 years on display at the London Motorcycle Museum and has an estimate of £60,000 to £80,000.

The 1,096cc 11-50HP was the largest of the Brough Superiors, known as the 'Rolls Royce' of motorcycles, to enter series production. Only 308 machines were produced in total between 1933 and 1939, with a claimed top speed of 85mph, (70mph pulling the side car).

The Bonhams Auction
ATO 574 is just one of over 400 important motorcycles to be offered in Bonhams' annual Spring Stafford Sale.

Another machine to have a brush with stardom is a 1962 Triumph 649cc TR6SS Trophy ridden by Bud Ekins, American bike racer, restorer, stunt rider and friend of Steve McQueen, who performed the famous motorcycle jump in the classic film The Great Escape. Ekins rode this Triumph to win a gold medal in the 1962 International Six Days Trial. Estimate £20,000 – 30,000.

The Bonhams two-day auction, Europe's largest and longest standing motorcycle sale, will represent the A-Z of motorcycling, offering more than 100 individual marques and 200 lots of motorcycle spares and associated memorabilia.

As Sergeant Wilson would say, 'How lovely'.
