Strong Showing across the Board at Greek Sale

There was strong bidding for works from all periods of Greek art at Bonhams Greek Sale in London on Wednesday 17 April. The sale made more than £1million.

Among the highlights were:

- Composition, by Yiannis Moralis (1916-2009). A rare and important work, dating from 1951, it was shown in the major Moralis exhibition at the Benakis Museum in 2018. Sold for £90,063 (estimate: £70,000-100,000).

- L' Aeroport by Nikos Engonopoulos (1910-1985) sold for £81,313 (estimate: £60,000-80,000).

- Sunset promenade with ships in the distance by Constantinos Volonakis (1837-1907). Sold for £56,313 (estimate: £40,000-60,000).

- Reconstruction # 86 by Lucas Samaras (1936-). Sold for £50,063 (estimate: £40,000-60,000).

- After the Inauguration by Volonakis. Sold for £47,560 (estimate: £30,000-50,000).

Bonhams Greek Art specialist, Anastasia Orfanidou said, "This was a broad-based sale with great examples of paintings and sculpture from all the significant eras of Greek Art. Collectors responded enthusiastically to the wide range of works on offer."
