WORLD WAR I: U.S. NAVY RECRUITMENT POSTER.
FLAGG, JAMES MONTGOMERY. 1877-1960. Navy! Uncle Sam is calling YOU! ENLIST in the Navy! DO IT NOW!I WANT YOU. New York: Leslie-Judge Co., 1917.
Broadside poster showing Uncle Sam demanding you enlist in the Navy. Faint wrinkling, old corner crease, a few small edge repairs.

A FINE WORLD WAR I US RECRUITMENT POSTER using a variation of the iconic "I want you" Uncle Sam image (see lot 3), calling for men to enlist in the Armed Forces, which was first published in 1916 as the cover for Leslie's Weekly. With the US Declaration of War against Germany in 1917, the War Dept called on Flagg to step up again, and his famous Leslie's cover image and this navy adaption were issued as recruitment posters and used throughout the country. The Uncle Sam image was adapted from the style of the British Lord Kitchener recruitment poster, with Flagg using a older form of his own face.
