Best in show...again

From rusty shell to concours winner, this Austin-Healey was restored to its former glory explains Poppy McKenzie Smith

Despite its immaculate outward appearance, this 1955 Austin-Healey 100 BN2 would not have always appeared so at ease on the concours lawn. Discovered in a very sorry state, the current owner miraculously realised the significance of his and and spent years painstakingly restoring the vehicle to its former glory.

Originally created as one of the show cars for the 1955 Earls Court Motor Show, the car was displayed in its striking Florida Green over Old English White livery. The car enjoyed a decade of devoted ownership — receipts detailing its every visit to the garage are still on file.

Images of the motor car basking in the sunshine at Lake Garda and throughout Italy in the early 1960s show it enjoying Continental tours with an early owner before being sold via the classifieds in The Times newspaper.

Approximately three owners later, the current keeper discovered the car and took the brave decision to restore it. He noted 'Show Car' written in pencil on some of the ttings and dedicated subsequent years to piecing together both the car and its history.

His hard work paid off, and this concours winning motor car is now an exquisite example of an Austin which will attract admirers of
the marque from across the globe. Bonhams estimates it to achieve in excess of £100,000 at its Festival of Speed sale on 30 June.
