Stik Triumphs at Bonhams Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale in London

LondonChildren of the Fire by the street artist STIK achieved an impressive £247,000 at Bonhams Post-War and Contemporary Art sale today (Thursday 30 June) at New Bond Street, London. The work was created in the aftermath of the London Riots in 2011, sprayed on to the garage door of a vegan community centre in Hackney, and had a pre-sale estimate of £120,000 - 180,000 – the highest estimate ever given to a work by the artist.

The 35-lot sale made £2,221,673, with 82% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.

Oliver Morris-Jones, Head of Sale, commented, "We are delighted with the results of today's sale, and especially to have achieved such a great price for the artist STIK. His bold and playful works never fail to capture people's attention, and we are thrilled that Children of the Fire clearly caused such excitement amongst collectors. Bonhams has always been at the forefront of championing contemporary talent, and we are extremely pleased that STIK is continuing to reach new audiences."

Born in 1979 and based in London, STIK is famously guarded when it comes to his personal life. Having learnt his craft on the streets around fellow street art contemporaries in East London, he places community at the heart of his practice – and spends a great deal of his time restoring his works in public spaces. In 2012, as he prepared for his first gallery show, he was living in a St Mungo's homeless hostel. In 2017, his work Couple Hold Hands in the Street in Shoreditch was voted the UK's 17th-favourite artwork in a Guardian poll.
