The current lot was owned by the vendor's great uncle, Siegfried Popper, who was an eminent naval architect with the Austro Hungarian navy and designed their warships (equivalents of the British Dreadnoughts) at the turn of the twentieth century. He was awarded the rank of Technical Admiral- a first for any naval architect. It is rumoured that a similar watch was made for Kaiser Wilhelm II.
