A group of 3 works on the Sanitary Commission and medical aid to war wounded:
1. FORMAN, JACOB G. The Western Sanitary Commission; A Sketch of Its Origin, History, Labors for the Sick and Wounded of the Western Armies, and Aid Given to Freedmen and Union Refugees, with Incidents of Hospital Life. St. Louis: 1864. PRESENTATION SLIP TIPPED IN: "With the respects of the author, J. G. Forman." Very fine. FIRST EDITION. "This book describes the origin and working of the Western Sanitary Commission, an organization formed in St. Louis on the model of the United States Sanitary Commission." (Freemon 56.) This scarce work includes a tinted frontispiece depicting the Soldiers Home in Memphis with men, women, and children standing in front of the large building. There is also an inserted lithograph depicting the U. S. General Hospital, Jefferson Barracks in Missouri.
2. GOODRICH, FRANK B. The Tribute Book: A Record of the Munificence, Self Sacrifice and Patriotism of the American People During the War for the Union. New York: 1864. 4to. Contemporary morocco, elaborately gilt and stamped in blind. FIRST EDITION. This volume is an important source for understanding the scope of activities undertaken by the United States Sanitary Commission and other aid societies during the Civil War. For example, more than 130 pages are devoted to the Sanitary Fairs that raised funds to support the commission's activities. The text is complemented by 147 wood engravings by prominent artists including Alfred Waud and Thomas Nast.
3. MOORE, FRANK. Women of the War; Their Heroism and Self Sacrifice. Hartford: 1866. Publisher's cloth. FIRST EDITION. Several interesting descriptions of Civil War experiences are included in this series of biographical sketches of prominent women that contributed to the Union effort by working in hospitals and in many other ways. The biographical sketches are accompanied by fine engraved portraits. Freemon 206.
