"The U.S. government's landmark report ... commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and prepared by electrical engineer Vannevar Bush, who directed U.S. government research during the Second World War, the document distilled the lessons of wartime into proposals for subsequent federal support of science.... It marked the beginning of modern science policy." (Roger Pielke Jr. "In Retrospect: Science: The Endless Frontier." In Nature 2010; 466:922-923). "Vannevar Bush's seminal report Science, the Endless Frontier, created a blueprint for U.S. scientific research in the post-World War II era. Bush's report empowered government support for innovation and basic research at the nation's universities, and policies that ultimately drove U.S. prosperity, health, and national security" ("The Endless Frontier: The Next 75 Years in Science." News Release, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine. December 17, 2020). A well-preserved copy of this seminal document.
