John J. Abel "was one of the most distinguished biological chemists of his day and the founder of pharmacology in America" (Tattersall, in DMB 1:94). See John Parascandola, The Development of American Pharmacology: John J. Abel and the Shaping of a Discipline (Baltimore 1992). The first offprint is inscribed in Abel's hand: "Dr. Hurd, with the compliments of J. J. Abel and W. S. David." Henry Hurd was the first superintendent of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additional inscribed and/or signed offprints are items 5, 7, 8, 26, and 31.
