A WHITE JADE CARVING OF A BOY AND FELINE
18th century
The boy deftly carved reclining with one knee up, clad in loose flowing robes with finely carved belt and folds, a tuft of hair atop his pate, the face with jovial expression, the cat with pricked ears, almond-shaped eyes and incised fur clambering playfully down the boy's left side into his lap, wood stand. 5.5cm (2 1/8in) wide. (2).

十八世紀 白玉雕童子戲貓
The theme of boys playing with animals represent the implied wish for the prosperity and good health of male offspring. In the present group, the boy is depicted with a cat, symbolic of longevity, because cat (mao 猫) is a pun on the word for 'octogenarian' or 'nonagenarian' (mao 耄).

玉質潤白，精緻小巧。童子呈側臥狀，左腳曲立，姿勢舒泰自在，頭梳單髻，寬額飽滿，笑逐顏開，身穿寬袍，腰下束帶。貓杏眼大耳，爬走在童子身上，活潑生動，場面和樂融融。
以童子為題的器物自古已有，用以表達兒孫滿堂之願。童子乃人之初，而「貓」諧音為「耄」，意即耄耋，所謂耄耋之年是指八九十歲之人，故童子戲貓表達了多子長壽的美好祈願。
