Bonhams : 19th Century Paintings

The 19th Century Paintings department sells a rich and diverse range of paintings by the leading British and European artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The department holds four sales a year; two in London in March and September and two in New York in May and November.

Our team of highly experienced and passionate specialists ensure that Bonhams continues to achieve outstanding, often world-record, prices. With specialists in London, New York and Los Angeles, and more salerooms and sales than any other auctioneer, we are able to market our auctions to a wider international audience.

Our extensively researched and carefully curated catalogs feature works from the full spectrum of Victorian and European painting, reflecting the many styles and traditions of this diverse period of art. Our auctions regularly feature works from important painters such as Joaquin Sorolla, Henri Fantin-Latour, Sir George Clausen, Sir Alfred James Munnings, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones and John Atkinson Grimshaw.

Record-breaking sales have demonstrated the established and powerful credentials of Bonhams in this area. We currently hold world auction records for a number of artists, including Stanhope Forbes, Dorothea Sharp and Archibald Thorburn. In our February 2019 auction, we sold two stunning Orientalist works by Ludwig Deutsch for a combined total of £1.07 million.
