Pioneers in the field, we held the first-ever dedicated sale of Californian and Western paintings in June 1980. For nearly 40 years, the department has consistently led this market, promoting it beyond a regional collecting category and establishing its place within the larger context of American art history.

The department holds three sales a year in Los Angeles, representing 19th and 20th century artists connected to California and the West. The department has achieved its highest success with California Impressionism, realizing world-records for William Wendt, Joseph Kleitsch, E. Charlton Fortune, Granville Redmond, John Marshall Gamble and Matteo Sandona, with consistently strong results for Guy Rose and Edgar Payne.

The department held its finest sale to date of Western paintings and sculpture in February 2019 with the L.D. "Brink" Brinkman Collection, totalling $8,375,500 (89% by lot and 90% by value) with exceptional results for such artists as Howard Terpning, Ernest Martin Hennings, Frank Tenney Johnson, G. Harvey, Gerald Curtis Delano, William Gollings, John Ford Clymer, Joseph Henry Sharp, and Eanger Irving Couse.

California Modernists are a growing and highly sought-after category for the department, with leading results by such artists as Charles Reiffel, Henrietta Shore and Roger Kuntz.
