Bonhams organized the first-ever auction of Californian paintings in the early 1980s. Since then we have consistently led this market and brought it from a regional collecting area to a burgeoning national phenomenon.

The market for these works is exceptionally strong with high-quality examples finding their way to our salerooms three times a year. The California and Western Paintings department offers works ranging from 19th century artists such as Thomas Hill and William Keith to American Impressionist painters such as Edgar Payne, William Wendt and Guy Rose. Additionally, Western paintings are commonly sold by such important artists as Maynard Dixon, Herbert Dunton, Frank Tenney Johnson and Ernest Martin Hennings. California Regionalist painters are regularly featured as well, along with Modernist artists such as Henrietta Shore and Agnes Pelton.
