ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR FOR ANDERSEN'S SNOW QUEEN.

LEFLER, HEINRICH. 1863-1919. Original watercolor for "The Snow Queen" ["Die Schneekönigin"] for the 1911 Andersen-Kalender Zwölf Märchen, 232 x 178 mm, on 377 x 302 mm board, annotated to the verso, "Die Schneekönigin / Mai / Roth" and to lower front "4234 188 x 242," unsigned, corner mounted in matte.

Original watercolor illustration for Andersen's classic fairy tale "The Snow Queen" ["Snedronningen"], which forms the basis for the Disney blockbuster Frozen. First published in 1844 in Nye Eventyr. Første Bind. Anden Samling ("New Fairy Tales Second Series"), The Snow Queen is one of Andersen's longest, told in seven chapters, most intricate and most highly acclaimed. Disney's Frozen was originally intended to be a straight adaptation of The Snow Queen, which Disney had been interested in making since before 1940. As the writers wrestled the material, including the title character as villain, the storyline was adapted over two years into the 2013 film.

Heinrich Lefler was one of the great decorative artists of the Vienna secession, and a founder of the Hagenbund. He worked closely with his brother-in-law Joseph Urban, who provided the decorative borders for these watercolors when they appeared in Calendar.
