A YUKINOSHITA DŌ (CUIRASS) WITH A SIGNED NAKAYA YŌJIN HIDESHI-GE HELMET
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
Laced in dark blue with white highlights, comprising an eight-plate russet-iron kabuto finished on the crown with a gilt-brass three-stage tehen kanamono pierced with chrysanthemums, the mabizashi trimmed with gilt-brass fukurin, fitted with a five-lame shikoro ending on the top lame in long fukigaeshi applied with white leather and gilt-metal characters uzumaki, the bowl signed in the interior rear Nakaya Yōjin Hideshige saku, with a compass inset into a maedate of gold and black lacquer designed as a dial with the cardinal directions and a Buddhist ken; the russet-iron ressei menpō with a white stiff-bristle moustache, red-lacquer lips, and gilt teeth, fitted with a four-lame yodarekake; the russet-iron yukinoshita dō with vertical plates and exposed standing rivets, the upper section applied with white leather, trimmed in shakudō fukurin formed as twisted rope, and gilt-metal uzumaki characters, the fitted with seven sections of five-lame kusazuri, the lowest lame with further uzumaki characters framed by silver-lacquer flourishes; tsubo sode; oda gote with chain mail and uzumaki characters and splashed sahari (silver droplets) on the tekkō; nerikawa haidate; shino suneate; with a saihai (signal baton), an armour stand, and one storage box
