    1934 Mercedes-Benz 380K Cabriolet A
    Chassis no. 103367
    Engine no. 102.203.3.103367

All Mercedes-Benz motorcars of the inter-war period are collectible to a greater or lesser extent, and none more so than the fabled series of supercharged 'K' (Kompressor) high-performance models.

Introduced at the Berlin Motor Show in February 1933, the Typ 380 (W22) was powered by a straight-eight overhead-valve engine of 3.8 litres capacity – a vast improvement over its 380 S Mannheim predecessor's sidevalve unit. Further innovation could be found in the chassis. An all-new, state-of-the art design, it featured independent suspension all round: by wishbones and coil springs at the front and swing axles at the rear. As such it represented a significant advance in roadholding and handling compared with the offerings of rival manufacturers, most of which still relied on beam axles and cart springs. Long- and short-wheelbase versions were available.

In basic form the Typ 380 came with 89bhp on tap, while if specified with the optional Kompressor (supercharger), two types of which were available, maximum power was raised to either 118 or 138 horsepower. There was a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the upper two ratios, plus hydraulic drum brakes on all four wheels. A wide variety of Sindelfingen-built factory bodies was available, and the Typ 380 could also be purchased in chassis form for bodying by independent coachbuilders. Despite being widely admired for its refined chassis and powerful engine, the Typ 380 ceased production in 1935 and is one of the rarer Mercedes-Benz models of the between-the-wars period.

Only 157 examples of the supercharged Mercedes-Benz 380K were manufactured between 1933 and 1935. This small number included all body types, so this Cabriolet A - only 16 of which were made - is indeed a rare specimen. It is known that chassis number '103367' was delivered in April 1934 to its first owner in Zürich, Switzerland with the beautiful Cabriolet A coachwork it still wears today, as confirmed by Mercedes-Benz Museum archive extract. Equipped with Kompressor, an additional headlamp, and boot-mounted twin spare wheels, the car has an impressive appearance from all angles.

A letter on file from previous owner Max Hauser of Zürich, dated 13th November 1981, states that he got to know of the car's existence while still a youth in 1940, but although he tried, was unable to buy it at that time. He eventually succeeded in purchasing the Mercedes in the summer of 1948. Unable to afford its restoration at that time, Max Hauser placed the 380K in lockup storage where it would remain until the rebuild commenced in 1970. Max took the car for its first post-restoration drive on 25th September 1971. He lists four events entered with the 380K: Klausen-Pass-Berg-Rennen (August 1974); Schweisser Mercedes-Benz Veteranen Club (July 1976); Oldtimer Club Berne (June 1978); and Deutsches Auto-Museum, Langenburg (June 1980). The car then went into storage and was sold to Lukas Hüni AG on July 12th 1996 who brokered it to Mr. Werner Claas in Varel, Germany in December of the same year.

Four years later in December 2000, engineer Norbert Schröder completed a valuation report on the now freshly restored car (copy on file) in which he states that the car's external presentation was very good, likewise the coachwork, paint, and renewed leather interior, while the engine was found to run very well. No problems were encountered during the test drive, and Herr Schröder concluded that the restoration had been carried out to the highest standards and to the correct specifications. Shortly thereafter, on 7th May 2002, the Mercedes was registered to well known collector Dr Michael Kaufmann in Altausee, Austria. The car then passed in a part exchange deal with a Bugatti T55 to the current vendor in whose possession it has been since 2004, since when it has formed part of his extensive museum collection, seeing only occasional use.

Presented in stunningly beautiful condition, this rare Kompressor Mercedes comes with a very complete file including period sundry invoices, handwritten starting instructions, period handbook copies, Mercedes-Benz build sheet copies and photographs. A stunning looking and very rare Kompressor Mercedes not to be missed by the serious collector.
