Footnotes

  • The name, 'Posy' derives from 'poésie' the French word for poetry. Seemingly plain and simple in design, the most important part of a posy ring, is the concealed inscription to the inner band which had great sentimental significance to the wearer and was intended to be hidden while touching the skin. From the Medieval era until the Wedding Rings Act of 1855, when hallmarking left little room for posy inscriptions, these rings were very popular, to the extent that jewellers held stocks of both plain posy rings waiting to be engraved on request and posy rings that were already engraved for those happy to choose from a selection of inscriptions. From the 17th century onwards, posy inscriptions tended to be engraved in Italics and composed in either Latin, French or English.
