  • This 1964 Semi-Lightweight E-Type was built by a private collector of classic cars as part of his E-Type collection. The aim was to restore and build what most would consider to be three 'best of breed' examples: a 1961 'flat floor' 3.8 OTS; a 1965 4.2 OTS; and a Semi-Lightweight fast road/race car. The car was built in left-hand drive configuration and delivered new to the USA.

    This Semi-Lightweight incorporates a new steel monocoque, supplied by Martin Robey, while the engine has a cast-iron block and straight-port cylinder head, a specification that allows the car to run in most pre-'66 GT events. The aluminium body was hand built by an experienced artisan, featuring an aluminium bonnet, doors, louvred hard top, rear wings, tail and louvred boot lid. Other noteworthy features include a limited-slip differential; twin fuel pumps; long-range fuel cell; adjustable shock absorbers; and an electronic rev counter, the latter supplied by Denis Welch Motorsport. The car is finished in the most attractive colour scheme of Old English White with blue stripes, similar to that of Briggs Cunningham's famous racing lightweight.

    Acquired back in 2005, this car has had a slow build process as the owner was also restoring four other E-types. Final preparation and finishing touches were entrusted to Wren Sport, who recommended that the engine should be tuned by recognised specialists Sigma to improve power output. Sigma made a number of improvements following sessions on their rolling road dynamometer.

    Other key features include: Lightweight specification radiator and header tank, provided by NAR, an oil cooler, front brake callipers from Jaguar Mark IX, upgraded front and rear suspension, mangoletsi inlet manifold with triple Weber 45 DCOE 9 carburettors, exhaust manifold and stainless steel sports exhaust , a tilley driver race seat along with an aluminium lightweight specification passenger seat (additional similar driver's seat for road use). A custom roll cage, seat belts, fire extinguisher system and engine and battery cut offs. Further to this, a lightweight race battery has been fitted along with a lightweight alternator and high torque starter motor, coupled with electronic ignition with high performance HT leads. The body is fitted with lightweight specification bonnet side latches, with leather safety straps, supplied by Simon Dunford and aluminium air ducts and scoops to front and rear brakes, also supplied by Simon Dunford. Perspex headlight covers and a set of Dunlop style aluminium E-Type lightweight wheels and spinners, supplied by Realm Engineering.

    FIA approved and road legal, with current HTP papers, this expertly prepared Semi-Lightweight is ready to enjoy on this year's many E-Type 60th Anniversary celebrations and events.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium.

For Motor Cars, Motorcycles and vehicle registration numbers a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £500,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £500,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalog.

Storage Notices

Motor Cars
Vehicles must be collected from the sale venue no later than 6pm on the day of the sale Wednesday 19 May 2021.

Buyers should satisfy themselves that they have collected all relevant log books, documents and keys relating to their Lot(s) at time of collection. Otherwise Lots shall be removed to storage at the Buyer's expense (see below). Lots are at the Buyer's risk from the fall of the hammer. It is strongly advisable that overseas purchasers and absentee bidders make arrangements regarding collection with Bonhams in advance of Sale.

Removal and Storage of Vehicles
All Lots not removed in accordance with the above will be transported by Straight Eight Logistics to store.
