RARE PENDULE SQUELETTE FRANCAISE DU DEBUT DU 19EME SIECLE A FORME D'ENTREE DE SERRURE, LONGUE RESERVE DE MARCHE
A good and rare early 19th century French long duration 'keyhole' skeleton clock,
The 17cms white enamel Arabic chapter ring frame by a beaded cast bezel, minute track and quarter hours, with distinctive pierced hands, mounted on a waisted brass frame to an oval marble base and ball feet, the visible movement running vertically from the 6 o'clock winding square, the going train with high count pinions and finely cut wheels to the pinwheel escapement, the countwheel strike powered by a remontoir topped up by the continous motion of the centre arbor, the horozontal bell mounted below 43cms (17ins) high

Footnotes

  • An identical example of this strike system is illustrated and discussed in Derek Roberts 'Continental and American Skeleton Clocks', Figures 123 a) and b). Roberts describes the strike system as follows:

"...the strike train (gaining power) from the continuous rotation of the centre arbor which winds a spring in a small barrel on which is mounted the primary wheel of the striking train and the countwheel. The primary wheel drives a pinion carrying the second wheel and this has three lifting pins near its centre and a combined locking-off and warning pin on its rim. This wheel in turn drives a pinion carrying a three-vaned fly. A combined warning and lifting piece is operated in the conventional manner by a pin in the rear of the cannon wheel and by means of another pin disengages the locking piece."
