Yu Hong is a rare sensation of a portrait painter in the world of Chinese contemporary art, who possesses the ability to merge poetic sentiments and contemporary significances in her daily life. Solid and effortless painting skills as well as extremely sensitive capture of the charm of characters have made Yu one of the leading Chinese contemporary female artists. Motherhood is undoubtedly one of the most important milestones in her life. For Yu, who is delicate in emotions, all kinds of feelings and reflections on life were aroused throughout the stages of nurturing a new life, which prompted her to create the Witness to Growth series. After the birth of her daughter, Yu found that she was very similar to her daughter when she was a child, but there was a huge difference in the backgrounds of the two. Yu used then-taken photographs from the year she was born as references and reinterpreted them, simultaneously enlarging and outputting the news photographs found in media in units of years. Since the birth of her daughter, she has added the record of her daughter's daily life, making the series a total of 40 gropus of work in an autobiographical style. Yu uses her personal life from birth to the present to profile the grand background of social changes, interpreting the living conditions and essence of a generation with personal memories and experiences that are full of affection. Yu once said in an interview, "In my life, I found a lot of things that overwhelm my heart and yet can hardly be expressed through words. These are stories about kindness of human, barriers, speculation, love...... Everyone is driven by these sentiments; life stories are then being unfold. They became the subject of my work."
