  • Not to be confused with the conventional front-wheel drive Renault 5 Gordini Turbo or GT Turbo, the Renault 5 Turbo (and later Turbo 2) was a mid-engined homologation special built in limited numbers for Group B rallying between 1979 and 1986. Renault's considerable Formula 1-derived turbo-charging expertise was applied to the humble 1.4-litre overhead-valve engine, resulting in a power increase to 160bhp (in road trim), an output sufficient for a top speed of 260km/h and a 0-100km/h time of around 7 seconds. In the Turbo, this remarkable little engine was mounted amidships (where the rear passenger seats had been) and drove the rear wheels via a five-speed transaxle.

    A thinly disguised two-seater supercar, the Turbo was first seen in prototype form at the 1978 Paris Salon and made its competition debut in 1980. In 1981 Ragnotti/Andrié won the Monte Carlo Rally outright for Renault and the following year Ragnotti won the Tour de Corse. Faced with increasing competition from teams running four-wheel-drive cars, Renault responded with more powerful Tour de Corse and Maxi Turbo variants, Ragnotti adding another Tour de Corse win in 1985. At the end of the season the works team retired the 5 Turbo from competition.

    This Renault 5 Turbo was sold new to a Mr Valli in Sion, Switzerland in 1983 and bought from him by the current vendor in 1990. Recent maintenance has included replacing the fuel pump (2016); replacing the alternator (2017); completely overhauling the fuel system (2017); and a major service that included renewing all the spark plugs and injectors (invoices on file). Described by the vendor as in impeccable condition throughout, the car comes with its original Renault wallet containing the warranty card; original build cards; original owner's book and service book; and radio instructions book. The car also comes with its tool kit; original jack; spare wheel; Contrôle Technique; and a Swiss Carte Grise.

    La Renault 5 Turbo (puis Turbo 2), qu'il ne faut pas confondre avec les banales Renault 5 Gordini Turbo ou GT Turbo à traction avant, était un modèle spécial à moteur central, construit en série limitée entre 1979 et 1986 et destiné à l'homologation en Groupe B pour le rallye. L'immense expérience du turbo acquise par Renault en Formule 1 fut transposée au modeste moteur 1,4 litres à soupapes en tête. Le turbo faisait monter la puissance à 160 ch (en version route) qui permettait d'obtenir une vitesse maximale de 260 km/h et un 0 à 100 km/h aux environs de 7 secondes. Sur la Turbo, ce remarquable petit moteur était monté au centre (à la place des passagers arrière) et entrainait les roues arrière par le biais d'une transmission transaxle à cinq rapports.

    La Turbo, une supercar à peine déguisée, fut dévoilée sous forme de prototype au Salon de Paris en 1978 et fit ses débuts en compétition en 1980. En 1981, Ragnotti/Andrié remportaient le rallye de Monte-Carlo pour Renault et l'année suivante Ragnotti gagnait le Tour de Corse. Confrontée à des voitures d'usine à transmission intégrale de plus en plus nombreuses, Renault répondit avec les versions 5 Tour de Corse et 5 Maxi Turbo, plus puissantes, Ragnotti s'adjugeant un Tour de Corse supplémentaire en 1985. À la fin de la saison, l'équipe d'usine retirait la 5 Turbo de la compétition.

    Cette Renault 5 Turbo a été vendue neuve à M. Valli de Sion, en Suisse en 1983 auquel le vendeur l'a achetée en 1990. Une récente révision a vu le remplacement de la pompe (2016), de l'alternateur (2017), la révision complète du système d'alimentation (2017) et le remplacement des bougies et des injecteurs (factures au dossier). Décrite par le vendeur comme étant dans un état impeccable, la voiture est vendue avec sa pochette Renault contenant la carte de garantie, la fiche constructeur, le manuel du propriétaire et le carnet d'entretien, tous originaux, et le mode d'emploi de la radio. Elle est également accompagnée de sa trousse à outils, de son cric, et de sa roue de secours, de son contrôle technique et de sa carte grise suisse.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalog.
