A 1940 London Underground Platform Map by H C Beck
London Transport Code: 40 - 3124G - 2000 H C Beck
Printed by Waterloo & Sons Limited, London & Dunstable and published by London Transport, 55, Broadway, Westminster, S.W.1,
This incredibly scarce H C Beck platform map of the diagram of lines (based on H C Beck's original diagram of lines introduced in January 1933) printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited would have hung on one of the platforms of the London Underground network in 1940 (This is very unusual as it is probably the only platform map to be circulated during World War II, as the next platform maps were distributed in 1945). This size of platform map was printed in extremely low circulation print runs and this is one of only 2000 printed in 1940. Most platform maps were simply thrown away at the time; covered over (making them irretrievable) on the introduction of a revised version or lost or destroyed over time.
This platform map is particularly interesting as it shows pre-World War II Authorised Extensions. These authorised extensions were on the central line west to Denham and east to Ongar, and on the Northern line, north to Aldenham, High Barnet and Alexandra Palace. Some of these proposed extensions were never completed following World War II.
