FROM THE COLLECTION OF LOUISE TAPER
A MATZOS BOX PRESENTED BY THE MANISHEVITZ BROTHERS TO WARREN G. HARDING.
Silver plate mounted black morocco matzos box with blue velvet interior lining, inscribed for presentation, "To / President and Mrs. Harding / with sincere good wishes / from / the Manischewitz Brothers / 'now good digestion wait on appetite and health on both' / Cincinnati Ohio April 21-1921," some tarnishing to accents, mild wear to surface.
Provenance: gift of Hirsh and Max Manischewitz to Warren G. Harding, 1921 (inscription); given by Florence Harding to Maggie Rogers, First Maid of the White House; by descent to her daughter Lillian Rogers Parks, author of My Thirty Years Backstage at the White House (copy of 1982 Parks letter); sold by Parks to Raleigh DeGeer Amyx (letter); consigned to Historical Collectibles Auction, Burlington, NC, September, 1997 (listing); acquired from the above (through an agent) by Louise Taper (receipt).

The B. Manischewitz company was founded in Cincinnati in 1888 by Dov Behr, a rabbi who invented a conveyor belt method to mass produce matzos. By 1921, when this box was presented to Warren G. Harding, the Manischewitz sons, Hirsch (1891-1943) and Max (1890-1947) had built the company into the world's largest producer of matzos. Harding, also from Ohio, supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The inscription's reference to "good digestion" invokes Harding's years-long struggle with indigestion. The paperwork accompanying this piece includes a penciled note on White House stationery reading "For President / Chest containing matzos / from Max Manischewitz / Cincinnati O...." In her 1982 letter selling the box to Amyx, Parks explains that her mother, Maggie Rogers, was very close to Florence Harding, having nursed the First Lady throughout the fall of 1922 as she recovered from a serious kidney infection.
