Edwin Stanton served with distinction as Lincoln's Secretary of War during the Civil War. He is best remembered for his cool and collected response to Lincoln's assassination, issuing orders to protect other leaders, directing generals' movements, and informing the nation of the tragedy. He continued to serve as Secretary of War in the Johnson administrating, and often clashed with the President over issues like Reconstruction. It was Johnson's attempt to fire Stanton that led to the country's first Presidential impeachment trial.

This portrait was commissioned by Stanton's alma mater, Kenyon College, where it hung for many years. See The Filson Club History Quarterly, Vol. 26, No. 3, Louisville, Kentucky, July 1952, p 258 (Edwin M. Stanton portrait commissioned by Kenyon College).
