Numbers 1 and 2 front wrappers with pasted Art and Poetry: Being Thoughts towards Nature. slip over original title, number 4 with pasted slip over month on front wrapper, infrequent spots, free endpapers with offset from dentelles, spine faded to brown, light shelfwear.

FIRST EDITION, IN A BEAUTIFUL COBDEN-SANDERSON DOVES BINDING, of one of this important, early Pre-Raphaelite periodical. William Michael Rossetti discusses a similar example in the essay entitled "The Germ, 1850" which accompanied a facsimile publication of same, by Elliot Stock, in 1901. He writes: "One heard of such prices as ten shilling for a set of "The Germ," then 2 pounds, 10, 30, etc., and in 1899, a copy handsomely bound by Cobden-Sanderson, was sold in America for 104 pounds. Will that high-water mark ever be exceeded? For the sake of common-sense, let us hope not." The present copy appears in the Maggs Bros. "Book Bindings" Catalog (No. 407) in 1921, Item #257, with a full-page photograph and the description, "Bound by Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery" and priced at 78 pounds. The periodical is rare at auction likely because it was ahead of its time and sold poorly. It's reported that only 70 copies of the first number were sold. The publication ceased after only 4 numbers. Contributing authors include Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti (credited under the pseudonym Ellen Alleyn), William Michael Rossetti, Thomas Woolner, James Collinson, William B. Scott, Ford Maddox Brown, Walter H. Deverell, Frederic George Stephens (under the pseudonyms John Seward and Laura Savage), Major Calder Campbell and John Orchard.
