AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF PRE-RAPHAELITE LITERATURE
ROSSETTI, CHRISTINA. 1830-1894.
Original drawing of snowdrops in purple pencil, sent by CGR to Lucy Rossetti, February, 1887, 105 x 70 mm, noted in CGR's hand, "I doubt whether you will make out my copy from nature," and on the verso "5/2/87" in the hand of Helen Angeli Rossetti.

RARE, POIGNANT DRAWING OF SNOWDROPS BY CHRISTINA ROSSETTI. Rossetti notes beneath her sketch that its "her copy from nature." But she clarifies in a follow-up letter to WMR on February 21, 1887, "Alas! my snowdrops were merely some given me by Harriett, though in the course of the transaction I recollected Lucy's in one never-to-be-forgotten drawing" (The Family Letters of Christina Rossetti, London, 1908, p 162). The "never-to-be-forgotten drawing" she refers to is a drawing made by Lucy Rossetti of their infant Michael in death. In her discussion of this drawing in Illustrations of Christina Rossetti, Lorraine Kooistra notes that snowdrops ("as Spring's messengers") always made CGR think of their sister Maria, whose birthday was in February, "After Maria's death, Christina often brought snowdrops to her grave site in Brompton" (p 158, and note at p 258, quoting Rossetti). A poignant drawing bringing to mind the death of her sister Maria, and arousing memories of her would-be nephew the infant Michael. See also, The Family Letters of Christina Rossetti, London, 1908, pp 159-162.
