Small 8vo (170 x 103 mm). Modern green levant morocco by DE SAUTY, covers with triple gilt rule, upper cover decorated with gilt diamond-shaped grid composed of 16 diamonds, each centered with gilt and red morocco onlay tulips, spine sectioned with gilt lettering and tiny heart tooling, all edges gilt, custom cloth clamshell case. Cancel leaf with partial cancel tear, free endpapers with offset from dentelles, upper joint starting, spine sunned.
Provenance: Rossetti family copy, inscribed on the verso of the title-page by William Michael Rossetti to his daughter Mary: "To my very dear daughter Mary I give this, one of the few remaining copies of her Aunt's early Verses / W.M. Rossetti 22 June/95."

FIRST EDITION, ROSSETTI FAMILY COPY, signed and inscribed by brother William Michael Rossetti and WITH ORIGINAL CANCEL LEAF, also inscribed in pencil by W.M. Rossetti: "This leaf was cancelled, & another substituted as in body of text / WMR." We can find no other copies with a similar bibliographic designation by William M. Rossetti.
Verses published when Rossetti was just 16 and with the funding of Rossetti's grandfather, includes poems written as early as age 12. The volume opens with the poem "The Dead City," considered a precursor to her much celebrated "Goblin Market" that was first published in 1862. Verses provides an important view of the poet's development.
