WRIGHT BROTHERS: 1908
JIMMY HARE PHOTOGRAPH OF WRIGHT FLYER SIGNED BY BOTH WRIGHT BROTHERS.
Photograph Signed ("Wilbur Wright"), ("Orville Wright"), on silver gelatin print photograph of Wright Flyer in flight at Fort Myer, VA, September 12, 1908, Approximately 5 x 7 inches, with Collier's Weekly stamp on the verso and identified in pen on the caption line: "Wright Bros. aeroplane at Fort Myer Sept. 12."

English-born photojournalist James H. (Jimmy) Hare became perhaps the most prolific photographer for Collier's Weekly after photographing the events of the Spanish American War. He photographed the Wright brothers' flights at Kill Devil Hills in 1908, and again at Fort Myer that year. Hare's photographs Kill Devil Hills were published in Collier's Weekly on May 30, 1908, marking the first appearance of the Wright Flyer in print.
The above image comes from Orville Wright's demonstration of the flyer at Ft. Myer: "On Saturday the 12th, five thousand people encircled the parade grounds. As they had never been able to do until now the American people were seeing with their own eyes one of their country's greatest inventions in action. Among those who rushed to congratulate Orville was Octave Chanute, who, a bit out of breath, exclaimed, 'Good for you, my boy!,' then asked him how it felt to be making history, 'Pretty good,' Orville said, 'but I', more interested in making speed'" (McCullough p 186).
A fantastic souvenir from one of the demonstrations that helped to make the Wright Brothers and their invention world famous. McCullough. The Wright Brothers. NY: [2015].
