Sammy Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925- May 16, 1990) was born in Harlem to dancer Elvera Davis and Vaudeville performer Sammy Davis. By the age of three he had joined his father on vaudeville with his partner forming the Will Maston Trio and toured the country with them performing for much of his childhood until being called to service at age 17. Upon his return after WW2, he re-joined the trio and they began touring again. In 1951 the trio was invited to perform at Ciro's in West Hollywood following the Academy Awards and he quickly gained popularity for his talents as a singer, actor and performer.
In 1956 he performed on Broadway opposite Chita Rivera in "Mr. Wonderful" and in 1964 received a Tony nomination for his performance in "Golden Boy" and is said to have had the first interracial kiss on Broadway. Davis had started his film career earlier in 1933, and in 1960 he was part of the ensemble cast of "Oceans 11" alongside the rest of the Rat Pack.
In 1966 Davis was given his own variety show called "The Sammy Davis Jr. Show" and released his biggest musical hit "The Candy Man" in the summer of 1972 reaching the Billboard top 100. Soon after he began a stint in Las Vegas with a show called "Mister Show Business". His career waned over time, but he was invited to tour again with his old friends Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Liza Minelli in 1972. Davis had a long and popular career and was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award for his television performances. He was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1987, and in 2001, he was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
