Footnotes

  • This magnificent Lorraine-Dietrich was purchased in 2003 as a rolling chassis by Edwardian-era guru John Brydon (receipt for €58,000 on file) and built to replicate the 1905/1906 works racers. The car was featured in The Automobile's 'Finds and Discoveries' column (copy on file). Displacing 8,620cc and rated at 60hp (RAC), the four-cylinder Turcat-Méry engine was originally fitted to Lorraine-Dietrich chassis '8924'. The engine was worked on by specialists Formhalls in 2006, being white-metalled, line-bored, and balanced. The gearbox/transaxle is a Delahaye unit with three forward speeds and reverse, while the front axle is Lorraine-Dietrich dating from 1905. New front wheels were cast in aluminium in 2005. There is a photographic record of the rebuild on file together with numerous bills, technical drawings, assorted correspondence, and a Science Museum dating certificate. Mike New of Hinton Historic Engineering, Leicestershire completed many items on the car: steering, springs, brakes, engine mounting, clutch, chain guards, shock absorbers, radiator repairs, etc in 2007.

In 2014 the Lorraine-Dietrich featured in the award-winning Targa Florio film, Pistons, Passions, Pleasure – a Sicilian Dream. Completing the 'lost boys' trip to Sicily without breaking sweat. Serviced again by Hinton in recent years and in excellent working order, this very well sorted Edwardian road-racer has been used for numerous VSCC races, hill climbs, continental rallies and is presented in wonderful condition. Just hop in and drive!
