8vo. Publisher thin blue card, ruled and decorated in blind, gilt device to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt, yapp fore-edge, wear to hinges and corners, custom chemise, and morocco-backed box.
Provenance: Dr. R.C. Brown (authorial inscription to endpaper, Oxford Dec 17, 1909); "ACF" (ink monogram to lower corner of endpaper, dated "iii/27"); Otto Oren Fisher (1881-1961, Detroit physician and collector, bookplate); James Tait Goodrich (bookplate).

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED: "Dr. R.C. Brown/ from Wm Osler/ For all you've done for the profession/ Oxford, Dec 17th, '09". Sir Robert Charles Brown began as the house surgeon at the Preston Dispensary and continued after the founding of the Preston Royal Infirmary in 1870 as its Consulting Medical Officer and benefactor. His generosity supported many local institutions, including the Cambridge Research Hospital, officially opened in 1912. This edition was printed from copies of the books lent by Osler from his library, and in type designed by Bishop Fell in 1660.
