RARE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL, including the famous operating theatre view of Halsted's famous "All-Star Operation," celebrating the opening of the new amphitheater at Hopkins in 1904. Showing William Halsted at work in the operating room with full gallery behind him and Harvey Cushing turned away from the operating table, the photograph is one of the most famous views in the history of medicine. The books were produced in small numbers for JHH students and staff, and have varying numbers and collations of photographs — 30 - 50 photographs, according to Rutkow, although the collections we have seen have more. All of the Hopkins greats are captured here: Osler, Cushing, Halsted, Welch, Kelly, Thayer, Hurd, Kutcher, McCrae, and more. "What is photographically significant about these scenes... is the casual snapshot style of the images. They depict a table level view of the day's events and disregard sink placement and ancillary personnel, providing the viewer with a feeling of being in the operating amphitheatre" (Rutkow, American Surgery: An Illustrated History, p 216).
