Footnotes

  • The present lot is associated with White Swan, Sap-ut-ka-low-nee (1844-1936), also known as "Poker Jim". Born "where the Snake and the Columbia rivers meet", he has been variously identified as Walla Walla or Umatilla. Given the name "Poker Jim" by United States Army soldiers while serving as a scout during the Bannock War of 1878, White Swan was best known for his association with the Pendleton Round-Up, where he was leader or chief of the Indian camp from the event's inception in 1910 until his death a quarter century later. Two photographs of White Swan are included with the lot: one a reprint of a Thomas Leander Moorhouse portrait of "Poker Jim" in full Round-Up regalia; the other a studio portrait by an unidentified photographer, presumably taken around the same period, showing White Swan wearing the shirt offered in this lot. The possession of a Plains shirt by a Plateau man is not as unusual as it may first seem, given the American Indian propensity of bestowing important gifts upon each other, especially at significant times of gathering. Given White Swan's stature as a principal personage at the Round-Up, it is conceivable that this shirt was presented to him by a Plains delegate or participant at one of the annual events.
