Footnotes

  • Provenance
Collected circa 1890 by Dr. Edwin Knickerbocker Losee of Upper Red Hook, NY (1863-1934)
By descent to his son, James Knickerbocker Losee, of Las Vegas, NV (1899-1982)

This hide was likely collected during Dr. Losee's 1890 trip across the United States via the Northern Pacific Railroad, following his graduation from medical school. During this trip, Dr. Losee made a number of stops including to Kansas, Nebraska and two trips to view portions of Yellowstone Park (founded only 18 years earlier in 1872) including Pompeys Pillar monument outside of Billings, Montana as well as a stop in Gardiner, Montana, which served as the primary entrance to the park. Copies of photographs documenting Dr. Losee's return trip via the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad accompany the lot.
