SUMATRA, INDONESIA, 19TH-20TH CENTURY
41 cm high, 64 cm inner circumference

Footnotes

  • A heavy Karo-Batak necklace made of gilt silver elements with three main crescent-shaped central pendants with spangles, called bura layang-layang.

The main pendant alludes simultaneously to the shape of a boat, buffalo horns, the Karo adat house and the moon, all symbols of prestige. Bura layang-layang literally translates to 'kite', as a reference to the similarity between the pendant and kites from the region. The particular crescent-shaped design is omnipresent in the archipelago and is closely linked to Minangkabau decoration styles.

These ornaments were generally worn by men around the neck as part of Karo wedding finery. When combined with its female counterpart sertali, this piece becomes an extremely powerful 'soul-calling' object. (Rodgers, 1985)
