Footnotes

  • Provenance
James D. Julia Auctions, Fairfield, ME, Fine Art, Asian & Antiques, 19-22 August 2014, Lot 2176.

Before becoming a weathervane specialist in the early 1860s, Jewell (1821-1867) originally started his career with a metal casting and repair shop. His inventions ranged from hat trees to candy-making tools at his shop in Waltham. Jewell's pieces were popular during a transitional period in the production of weathervanes, creating a wide variety of styles at more economical prices as well as "made to order" pieces.

Jewell created seventy-eight varieties of weathervanes before tragically falling to his death, alongside his partner, off a collapsed scaffold in June of 1867. Their business was then taken over by Cushing & White, which eventually evolved into L. W. Cushing & Sons. The running horse was one of the most appealing weathervane forms; the 'jumping through hoop' being even more dynamic.
