Footnotes

  • The image of a striding figure is one we have come to associate with the work of Ndary Lo. The artist created a series of these "hommes qui marche", figures he referred to affectionately as "nit", a Wolof word meaning "person" or "character". In an interview with Marion Brousse, the artist said he could not keep himself from returning to these walkers:

"I don't know consciously where they are walking, but what is important to me is their movement. I'm obsessed with movement, it has to move."

Lo's characteristic slender and elongated figures often inspire comparisons to Alberto Giacometti, and so they should. Giacometti was heavily influenced by African sculptural traditions; Lo's aesthetic is a conscious cultural re-appropriation.

The title of this work, Taaru a talons, translates as 'Beauty in heels'. The female figure exudes effortless elegance, her long legs accentuated by her high heel shoes.
