Footnotes

  • Provenance
    The collection of Norman Ives, principal of Ives Sillman, publisher of the Walker Evans portfolio;
    gifted to the present owner, a New York private collection, c. 1975

    Literature
    Walker Evans: American Photographs, The Museum of Modern Art, New York/ 1988 edition, Harry N. Abrams, pl. 14

    This print was made as one of the edition of 100 authorized and approved by Evans in 1971. The prints from this portfolio are remarkably fine and consistent, with the printing done by a team led by Thom Brown, Evans's colleague at the Yale School of Art, then the faculty expert on technical matters. This is from Evan's negative; a variant, where Allie is half-smiling, is in the collection of The Library of Congress.
