Footnotes

  • Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist by a private European collector
    Thence by descent

After the triumphant sale of Fundamental Lexicon in Sotheby's first auction in Moscow in 1988, Grisha Bruskin gained international fame as the one of the most successful contemporary Russian artists. Bruskin's lifelong work is centred around the themes of Judaic and Socialist symbols and myths, often interlaced and juxtaposed.

A reflection on the artist's own Jewish identity, the series Alefbet is penetrated with the symbols of the Jewish traditions of the Talmud and Kabbalah interpreted and transformed by the artist into a new universal system of codes to reveal another dimension of Knowledge and Being itself.

"My conception of Alefbet is purely artistic, as if it were a game of marbles. It was important for me to create something in the shape of pages, palimpsests, writing, news, commentary... Alefbet is also made of mysterious writings, of rebuses. It is a kind of mythological dictionary where language is developed into a series of symbols, mythologems, and allegories that must be deciphered and guessed. You have to find your own personal explanation" - Grisha Bruskin
