Lot 67W Y
A FENDER/YATER HAWAII "PINTAIL" STRATOCASTER PROTOTYPE ELECTRIC GUITAR

US$ 15,000 - 20,000
£ 11,000 - 14,000
A FENDER/YATER HAWAII "PINTAIL" STRATOCASTER PROTOTYPE ELECTRIC GUITAR
2008
Coral-colored Stratocaster-style body with extended shaped tail, rosewood neck with maple centerstrip on verso, three single coil pickups, white pickguard, gold hardware, signed by Reynolds Yater on the reverse.
Provenance: Santa Barbara Surfing Museum.

From an idea conceived by skateboard hall-of-famer James O'Mahoney, Reynolds Yater shaped three prototype surf guitars for Fender in 2008: a pintail Telecaster, a teardrop Jazzmaster, and this pintail Stratocaster. The rosewood neck is by Phil Kubicki (Fender luthier who built the rosewood Telecaster for George Harrison and the rosewood Stratocaster for Jimi Hendrix, as well as the creator of the innovative Factor Bass). The finish is by Tom Kelley and the electronics by Seymour Duncan.
This blend of Strat and surf seems perfect for the surf rock stage. These never went into production at Fender and are of the greatest rarity.
