A REPRODUCTION RICK GRIFFIN GRATEFUL DEAD POSTER FEATURING THE "SURFING EYEBALL"
Grateful Dead / It's A Beautiful Day / Dance Theater Madness Concert / July 25, 26,27 Exhibit Hall.... 1969 (reprinted 1990s), rolled. Lithographic poster designed by legendary graphic artist Rick Griffin and featuring the "surfing eyeball" at the lower left and right. WITH: 4 framed color separations of the poster: red, yellow, blue and black, all used in the process of producing this reproduction.

Rick Griffin established a reputation as one of the leading artists of the psychedelic movement. During the late 1960s he designed several posters for the Dead and other bands, and his "flying eye" has become perhaps one of the most iconic images of the era. In this poster, one of his most collectible, Griffin modified the eyeball into a surfer as a wink to the Hawaiian venue.
26 x 22 in.

Footnotes

  • James O'Mahoney writes, "In 1970 I traded Rick a human skull for the original artwork for this poster. I had that piece for a while before I sold it. In the 1990s I made high quality copies off the original artwork. This poster is the color master, and the four single tone pieces are the individual separations."
