A mid-century Skate Car
"Zippy." Wood plank and roller skate with broom handle, c.1945.
Provenance: Santa Barbara Surfing Museum.
Literature: See Noll, Rhyn. Skateboard Retrospective. Schiffer Publishing, 2000.

This example, discovered by SBSM Curator James O'Mahoney at the Rose Bowl Flea Market 40 years ago, shows the ingenuity of skateboarders during the mid-twentieth century. The skate cart is constructed from a single roller skate, a length of wood (as the footplate), and a wooden box and broom handle as the cab and handlebar. O'Mahoney reports that he had a skate car at the age of four. It was common for kids to decorate the cab with bottle caps or paint; this one features a Jolly Roger and is named "Zippy."
