Footnotes

  • BMW's first post-war twin was the R51/2 based, as its designation suggests, on the pre-war R51. Improvements incorporated included a two-way damped front fork, a gearbox main-shaft damper, and a strengthened frame. In truth, the R51/2 was only a stopgap model to get production under way while BMW worked on something more modern. Its replacement, the R51/3, arrived in February 1951 and despite the similarity in designation had an entirely new and much neater looking engine incorporating a single, gear-driven camshaft and a crankshaft-mounted generator among a host of other advances. Although the R51/3's cycle parts remained essentially those of the pre-war period, this new engine would form the basis of BMW's future power units up to 1969.

Described as reliable and a very nice machine to ride, this pretty example has been partially restored over the years and is finished in the 'Royal Moroccan Guard' colour scheme of the owner's old R51/3 (left in Spain a long time ago). It is an early model equipped with steel hubs (later models used aluminium). The machine is offered with an original French Carte Grise and Swiss form 13/20.

    BMW R51/3 494 cm3 1952
    Cadre n° 527066
