Footnotes

  • Created after a lithograph that was taken from a gouache composition by Fernand Léger in 1948, Nature morte aux pommes encapsulates the artist's affinity for pure color. The woven tapestry presents a classical still life with apples that is reduced to its essential pictorial elements with a simplified color palette of primary colors woven against a flat monochromatic background. This simplification of form and color avoided an exact replication of nature, as Léger reflected in 1950: "The plastic life, the picture, is made up of harmonious relationships among volumes, lines, and colors. These are the three forces that must govern works of art. If, in organizing these three elements harmoniously, one finds that objects, elements of reality, can enter into the composition, it may be better and may give the work more richness" (quoted in Carolyn Lanchner, Fernand Léger, New York, 1998, p. 247). The simplified forms are richly expressed by the makers of the present work, Ateliers Tabard, the brothers and sisters in Aubusson who wove Nature morte aux pommes in March 1962.
