A highly decorated tribal cotton banner from the southern Philippines. 760 x 1130 mm. With central red panel and blue column to the fly and bordered by sections of white cotton, oversewn with numerous symbols of crocodiles, swords, beasts in white, and circular colored balls, the center of the flag with an elaborate arabesque design in black. Slight discoloration and staining to the white cotton margin.
Provenance: Mrs. Louise M. Chamberlain (gift to the de Young Museum); Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

A rare tribal banner likely brought back by an American soldier from the Filipino-American War, found in the Southern part of the Philippines. It is elaborately decorated, similar to some designs found in Australian aboriginal art.
