Hopi, (1941-2010), "Mozart's the Magic Flute," 1982, a suite of eight graphite and crayon drawings on paper under glass, set designs for Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, including: "In the Realm of the Wicked Queen of the Night" with a copy of a drawing of the Queen of the Night and a dragon between the mat and the glass lower left; "Under Ground Cavern," with copies of drawings of Papageno and Papagena between the mat and the glass lower left; "Sorastro's City"; "The Three Temples in Sorastro's City" with a copy of a drawing of Tamino and Pamina between the mat and the glass lower left; "The Ruin of the Observatory" with a copy of a drawing of the Wicked Queen of the Night between the glass and the mat lower left; "Under Ground Cavern" (a second work of the same title); "The Destruction of the Queen of the Night"; and "The Sun Temple" with photographs from the production and copies of character designs for the Assistant to the Queen of the Night and the High Priest Sorastro between the mat and the glass; each signed on the paper and signed again and dated lower right on the mat.

  • Artist and architect Dennis Numkena designed the stage, sets and costumes for two productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute produced for Arizona State University's Lyric Opera Company in Tempe, AZ. The first production was performed by the company in 1977, and Numkena was invited back to design a revival production in 1982, which was filmed for national television broadcast by PBS.

    A copy of an excerpt from the 1982 production's playbill and a copy of an invitation from the Heard Museum's Members-Only Preview of the 1982 production accompany the lot.
