Literature
SALINGER, JEROME DAVID. 1919-2010.
Typed Letter Signed ("J.D. Salinger"), to Marilyn Schachter, declining an interview, 1 p, 8v0 (178 x 120 mm), [New York], May 12, 1957, on letterhead of The New Yorker magazine, with original transmittal envelope.

Salinger writes "Thank you so much for your letter. It's very pleasing and heartening, and I wish I could do something for you in return. I don't feel free, though to be interviewed ... I really dislike so strongly the writer as interviewee." Salinger's reclusive behavior is the stuff of legend, and particularly his unwillingness to be interviewed by anyone, least of all a budding journalist. Marilyn Schachter was a student at Douglass College at Rutgers, University, graduating in 1959 with a degree in journalism. She went on to have a distinguished career as a writer and editor, despite Salinger's polite snub.
