HAYEK, FRIEDRICH AUGUST. 1899-1992.
Autograph Manuscript, "Discipline of Civilisation," 3 pp, ink on lined paper, 250 x 180 mm, n.p., [1978?], slight staining.

"...but at the same time many of those producing for a large market relieve more suffering than they know about."

A RARE F.A. HAYEK MANUSCRIPT, APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED, POSSIBLY AN EARLY DRAFT OF THE "EPILOGUE" OF LAW, LEGISLATION AND LIBERTY. Headed "Discipline of Civilisation," Hayek's manuscript traces the development of civilization from a common set of goals to a common set of rules, from the small horde to the Great Society. Undated, but based on the language and concepts tracing a "cultural evolution," the manuscript is clearly a part of the "Epilogue" to Law, Legislation and Liberty (1793-1978), including an internal page reference to "See Vol II, p..." further indicating the origin.

Considered his magnum opus, Law, Legislation and Liberty was published in three volumes concluding in 1978, and more fully develops his earlier ideas resulting in his most expansive analysis of sociological economics. The manuscript here is complete in itself, covering much of the ground of the "Epilogue" in a more streamlined argument, concluding: "Culture developed because those who succeeded in the pursuit of their own methods prospered and were imitated... Rules of conduct, factually observed, supported by opinion and sometimes enforced by organized power, have made the open society possible. They have never been designed and often not even been completely articulated in words. They have become general by the spreading of mores of the more successful groups which were imitated or grew by the accretion of outsiders."
