LA PÉROUSE, JEAN FRANCOIS GALAUP DE. 1741-1788.
A Voyage Round the World, in the Years 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788. London: J. Johnson, 1798.
3 volumes. 8vo (208 x 126 mm). Engraved portrait of La Perouse and 40 (of 41) engraved maps, charts and plates, many of which are folding. Contemporary speckled calf, alternating green and red gilt-lettered spine labels. Wanting "Liane of Chili" plate in third volume, foxing, first volume with hinges reinforced, first volume rebacked, bindings with general wear.
Provenance: Edward Joseph Dent (bookplate).

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Hill deduces that this edition likely precedes the Stockdale edition of the same year. "As the first foreign visit to Alta California, the La Perouse expedition described, delineated, and illustrated the brief visit with a view from the outside and thus the Voyage is a particularly important document of early California history" (Mathes, Volkmann/Zamorano 80, 49). Hill p 471; Howes L93; Sabin 38963; Zamorano 80 49 (mentioned as likely preceding Stockdale edition in the "other editions" section).
