Footnotes

  • Berlin ironwork jewellery was first made in Germany in the early 19th century and became increasingly popular during the Prussian War of Liberation of 1813-15. The Napoleonic wars had left a shortage of gold and silver and ladies were encouraged to donate their jewellery and precious metals in support of the war effort. In return the state provided intricate cast iron jewels lacquered black and which often bore the inscription 'Gold gab ich for fur Eisen' (I gave gold for iron). The fashion for this type of jewel continued long after the Prussian wars and more decorative designs were produced. This particular bracelet shows the influence of the Gothic revival during the 1830s. Johann Conrad Geiss (1771-1846) was one of the leading exponents of this genre.
