Footnotes

  • Originally housed in the Ferry Inn, Roseneath by Helensburgh. For a near identical example from that establishment see, Karen Moon 'George Walton Designer and Architect' 1993, (pl 81). A small difference is that a single background male figure is lacking in this example.

The lines refer to a traditional Scottish ballad. To avoid an outbreak of the plague in Perth in 1645, Bessie Bell and Mary Gray built themselves a bower by the banks of the River Almond; but the plague eventually spread even to this remote region, and they succumbed to it.
